There are so many different approaches to painting flowers! Sometimes I like to plan, do a value study, and share more details. Sometimes I like to get lost in enjoying colors and textures and the wonder of watercolor and see if I can find a painting in it. This sunflower painting was done that way. Painting on wet paper with wrapping tissue crinkled on it I applied a heavy dose of pigment in sunflower colors. After it dries I take the tissue off and see what I have. It’s like opening a present!
After seeing what I can’t bear to part with I start painting around the shapes, mostly negative painting in layers. This takes patience…and hope, imagination, and lots of “thinking time”! I also have to be determined not to paint out all of the flowing color and textures that I loved in the beginning. “Sunflower Symphony” is the end result of this adventure.
